Heads Up: Scanning for Risks and Opportunities

The human head is well balanced on top of the spine by evolutionary design.

As humans evolved from quadrupedal locomotion to walking on two feet, our spine became more upright and structurally, our skull became more centered on the spine than that of our early ancestors.

As we arrived at full stature on our two legs, the head was more centered on the top of the spine allowing for optimal height and mobility whenwell balanced.

Like our fellow mammals, for survival we need to see and sense the world around us. Having a head that moves easily on top of our spine yields the possibility of scanning the environment near and far with our eyes, ears, and sense of smell.

With easy mobility of our head, we can scan the environment for risks and opportunities. We can be present and open to all sorts of possibilities, including threats to our safety and chance sightings of friends and fun along the way.

What or who is out there on the horizon or across the room?

Our ability to be fully present in our surroundings is limited by pulling the head and neck down. Movement is impeded, and peripheral vision is diminished with even a little bit of squeezing down into ourselves.

Consider using yourself, your well-designed human self, for best advantage.

Let your neck muscles ease, lengthen up gently through your spine all the way up to the level of your ears. Your head can then balance and move easily on the very top of your neck a.k.a., spine. Enjoy the world around you!
